Out In The Dark – Richard Barnard

£3.50

Description

Scored for divisi SATB choir and alto saxophone, this is a setting of one of the last poems Edward Thomas wrote before he was killed in April 1917 during the battle of Arras. I grew up very close to where Thomas lived, near Petersfield, and know many of the places described in his poetry. He often used everyday nature as his subject, capturing complex ideas with a few simple words. The poem’s sense of different layers and ‘speeds’ of time is explored in this piece; The solo saxophone represents the individual within a surrounding, shifting universe. Written for Exultate Singers and first performed at St Georges Bristol on 8th February 2020.
