Description
This is a setting of one of the last poems Edward Thomas wrote before he was killed in April 1917 during the battle of Arras. Composer Richard Barnard grew up very close to where Thomas lived, near Petersfield, and knows many of the places described in his poetry. He often used everyday nature as his subject, capturing complex ideas with a few simple words. The poem’s sense of different layers and ‘speeds’ of time is explored in this piece; the solo saxophone represents the individual within a surrounding, shifting universe.
